# Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin for Men: What Actually Matters?

If you're considering injections to soften forehead wrinkles, frown lines or crow's feet, you may have heard that Dysport works faster, Xeomin is “purer,” or Botox lasts longer. Search long enough and you'll find confident claims for all three.

**Here's what matters: these are genuinely different prescription medications, but their most heavily advertised differences aren't always the differences that determine whether you'll like your result.**

Your anatomy, dose, injection placement and the movement you want to preserve deserve just as much attention as the brand.

## Botox vs. Dysport vs. Xeomin at a glance

All three are botulinum toxin type A neuromodulators. They temporarily reduce activity in selected muscles, softening expression lines. They have distinct formulations, product-specific dosing and different U.S. cosmetic approvals. [\[1\]](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=485d9b71-6881-42c5-a620-a4360c7192ab)[\[2\]](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=71313a04-1349-4c26-b840-a39e4a3ddaed)[\[3\]](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=3f35d6e0-3450-4abc-a0da-cc7b277e7c6e)

| | Botox Cosmetic | Dysport | Xeomin |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Active ingredient | OnabotulinumtoxinA | AbobotulinumtoxinA | IncobotulinumtoxinA |
| FDA-approved cosmetic areas | Frown lines, forehead lines, crow's feet, platysma bands | Frown lines between the eyebrows | Frown lines, forehead lines, crow's feet |
| Labeled frown-line dose | 20 units | 50 units | 20 units |
| Formulation | Contains associated proteins | Contains associated proteins | No complexing proteins |
| Duration | Often approximately 3–4 months | Often approximately 3–4 months; some study effects last longer | Often approximately 3–4 months |
| Does the brand's unit equal another brand's unit? | No | No | No |

These aren't treatment recommendations. The labeled doses describe specific approved indications, and actual treatment choices require clinical assessment. The duration estimates describe common expectations, not guaranteed results.

## First, understand the units

Suppose one injector recommends 20 units of Botox for the vertical “11” lines between your eyebrows. Another recommends 50 units of Dysport. That doesn't make Dysport weaker, or mean you're getting more medication in a meaningful apples-to-apples sense.

Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin each use product-specific potency units. They cannot simply be compared or converted as though they were identical measurements.

The FDA-labeled frown-line doses are 20 units for Botox Cosmetic, 50 for Dysport and 20 for Xeomin. Each manufacturer's units are specific to its product and assay. There is no FDA-approved universal conversion ratio. [\[1\]](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=485d9b71-6881-42c5-a620-a4360c7192ab)[\[2\]](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=71313a04-1349-4c26-b840-a39e4a3ddaed)[\[3\]](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=3f35d6e0-3450-4abc-a0da-cc7b277e7c6e)

It also means that a lower advertised **price per Dysport unit** doesn't necessarily translate to a lower treatment bill. Compare what it costs to treat the same concern, not the prices printed beside different units.

## Does Dysport really work faster?

It can begin working quickly. A systematic review of 42 Dysport studies found that onset was most frequently reported around two to three days, with some reports of effects within 24 hours. But that review was not proof of superiority over Botox or Xeomin; it also included manufacturer involvement. [\[4\]](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33488922/)

In a smaller direct comparison of all three products, Xeomin had an earlier measured onset than the other two at the specific doses tested. That doesn't establish Xeomin as universally fastest, either. [\[5\]](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24098087/)

And **first noticeable movement reduction isn't the same as the finished result**. Differences in how studies define onset can make products appear more distinct than they would be for an individual patient.

If you're planning treatment before a wedding, interview or important event, leave sufficient time for the full effect and any assessment rather than banking on a particular brand's first-day claim.

## Does Dysport spread farther?

“Dysport spreads more” is often presented as a product feature, particularly for larger areas like the forehead. It's too simple.

How far an injection's effect extends depends on the amount injected, dilution, technique and anatomy, among other variables. Comparative literature does not support treating wider spread as an inevitable, consistently useful property of Dysport. [\[6\]](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23440162/)

Consider your forehead. Softening the lines may be desirable, but weakening the wrong neighboring muscles could produce an unwanted heavy brow or asymmetry. A broader effect is neither inherently better nor worse: **the target is a controlled result, not maximum spread**.

## What makes Xeomin different?

Xeomin contains incobotulinumtoxinA without the complexing proteins associated with certain other formulations. That is a legitimate manufacturing difference. It's also why you may see it described as “naked” or “pure” botulinum toxin. [\[3\]](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=3f35d6e0-3450-4abc-a0da-cc7b277e7c6e)

But those nicknames can imply more than the science establishes. **Fewer accessory proteins don't automatically mean better wrinkle reduction, a more natural look or fewer adverse effects.** Direct clinical comparisons have shown Xeomin can achieve outcomes comparable to Botox for frown lines at studied doses. [\[7\]](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26509943/)

Xeomin is not merely a fallback brand. Its current U.S. label includes frown lines, horizontal forehead lines and crow's feet. The expanded upper-face labeling is important because older comparisons may still describe it as approved only for frown lines. [\[3\]](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=3f35d6e0-3450-4abc-a0da-cc7b277e7c6e)

### Does Xeomin prevent Botox resistance?

Rarely, patients can develop neutralizing antibodies that reduce a botulinum toxin's effect. That is one possible explanation for *secondary nonresponse*—when someone previously responded to treatment but later responds less well.

Removing complexing proteins may be relevant to the question of immunogenicity, but a plausible mechanism is not proof that the average cosmetic patient will have a better long-term response with Xeomin. A large meta-analysis of onabotulinumtoxinA trials across medical and cosmetic indications found neutralizing antibodies in around 0.5% of evaluable participants, with very few classified as secondary nonresponders. It was not a head-to-head comparison of the three brands. [\[8\]](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37235376/)

If a previous injectable “didn't work,” tell your provider exactly what happened. Timing, dose, placement, expectation and other explanations deserve consideration before assuming antibody resistance.

## Which one lasts longest?

Usually, a useful starting expectation for treatment of upper-face expression lines is roughly three to four months. Some people notice movement returning sooner; others experience a longer effect. [\[1\]](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=485d9b71-6881-42c5-a620-a4360c7192ab)[\[2\]](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=71313a04-1349-4c26-b840-a39e4a3ddaed)[\[3\]](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=3f35d6e0-3450-4abc-a0da-cc7b277e7c6e)[\[4\]](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33488922/)

You'll see claims that Dysport lasts five months while Botox or Xeomin lasts four. Those numbers may come from different clinical trials measuring different endpoints. Some Dysport studies indeed detected benefit at five months, but that does not establish a universal duration advantage over the other two products. [\[4\]](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33488922/)

Duration can also reflect treatment area, dose, muscle activity and what a patient counts as the treatment “wearing off.” One man notices the first return of forehead movement. Another considers treatment effective until his deepest frown line becomes prominent again.

The best product for you isn't necessarily the one with the longest number in an advertisement; it's the one that produces a satisfactory result with an appropriate treatment interval.

## Which looks most natural on a man's face?

**![Man with natural forehead and eyebrow expression during consultation](https://www.flycatcher.men/hs-fs/hubfs/botox-for-men-facial-movement-consultation-not-frozen.png.png?width=900&height=507&name=botox-for-men-facial-movement-consultation-not-frozen.png.png)**

**None of these brands has a monopoly on natural-looking results.**

If a man's eyebrows lift, frown or move when he talks, he may want to preserve some of that expression. Another man may prefer noticeably less movement. Both are reasonable goals, but they can call for different plans.

The injector needs to consider brow position, the balance among facial muscles, existing lines and the degree of relaxation you want. Expert guidance emphasizes careful facial assessment and anatomy rather than treating wrinkles as isolated marks on skin. [\[9\]](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26910696/)

Think of the deep vertical line that makes you look irritated when you're not. Reducing the frown muscles' activity may help you appear less tense. That doesn't mean freezing your entire upper face.

A useful consultation question is: **“Which muscles would you relax, and which would you deliberately leave moving?”** The answer may tell you more than the brand name.

## Do men need a different product—or a different plan?

Men don't inherently need Botox over Dysport or Xeomin. But facial muscle strength, brow anatomy and treatment goals can differ from person to person, and sometimes by sex.

In a randomized study involving 80 men treated for frown lines with Botox, some higher studied doses improved response and duration relative to the standard 20-unit dose. That is not a reason to give every man a higher dose. It supports individualized assessment rather than a one-size-fits-all rule. [\[10\]](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16188182/)

A man with strong frown muscles seeking substantial reduction may need a different approach from someone with milder movement whose priority is subtlety. The clinician should explain the plan—not use “men need more units” as a blanket sales pitch.

## Can you switch brands?

Yes. Someone who previously received Botox may be evaluated for Dysport or Xeomin, and vice versa. What matters is that the injector knows **which product you received, when, where, how much and how you responded**.

Did your brow feel heavy? Did too much movement disappear? Was the improvement too subtle or short-lived? Those details help more than saying “Botox didn't work.” The injector should not simply transfer your old unit number to a different medication because the units are not interchangeable. [\[1\]](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=485d9b71-6881-42c5-a620-a4360c7192ab)[\[2\]](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=71313a04-1349-4c26-b840-a39e4a3ddaed)[\[3\]](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=3f35d6e0-3450-4abc-a0da-cc7b277e7c6e)

## What does FDA approved—and off-label—mean here?

![Facial diagram identifying common cosmetic neuromodulator treatment areas](https://www.flycatcher.men/hs-fs/hubfs/Men%E2%80%99s%20Neuromodulator%20Treatment%20Map.png?width=900&height=600&name=Men%E2%80%99s%20Neuromodulator%20Treatment%20Map.png)

The products have different **U.S. cosmetic indications**, even though they share the same basic mechanism. Botox Cosmetic is labeled for frown lines, horizontal forehead lines, crow's feet and platysma bands. Dysport's cosmetic approval covers glabellar (frown) lines. Xeomin's current label covers frown lines, horizontal forehead lines and crow's feet. [\[1\]](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=485d9b71-6881-42c5-a620-a4360c7192ab)[\[2\]](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=71313a04-1349-4c26-b840-a39e4a3ddaed)[\[3\]](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=3f35d6e0-3450-4abc-a0da-cc7b277e7c6e)

Qualified clinicians may sometimes prescribe an approved medication **off-label** for a use that isn't on that product's FDA label. That could include certain cosmetic uses around the jaw, chin or lips, or forehead treatment with Dysport. Off-label doesn't automatically mean inappropriate, but neither should it be described as FDA approved. Ask why the approach is being recommended and what supports it.

## Are any of the three safer?

There's no solid basis to declare one of these brands universally safest. All are prescription biological medications with product-specific warnings, precautions and contraindications.

Possible adverse effects include injection-site reactions, bruising, headache, unwanted muscle weakness, asymmetry and eyelid or brow drooping, depending on the treatment area. Each carries an FDA boxed warning about distant spread of toxin effect; potentially serious symptoms can include trouble swallowing, speaking or breathing. [\[1\]](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=485d9b71-6881-42c5-a620-a4360c7192ab)[\[2\]](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=71313a04-1349-4c26-b840-a39e4a3ddaed)[\[3\]](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=3f35d6e0-3450-4abc-a0da-cc7b277e7c6e)

Patients should disclose medical history and medications before treatment. These products should not be administered at a proposed injection site with an infection or to someone with known hypersensitivity to the relevant product or its ingredients. Certain neuromuscular conditions require particular caution. A medically appropriate plan and experienced, properly qualified injector are more important safety considerations than branding alone.

## Why would a practice carry more than one?

There are sensible reasons: patients' prior responses, prescriber familiarity, approved uses, supply and cost. An injector may have a preference informed by experience, but that preference shouldn't be presented as proof that the preferred brand outperforms the others for everyone.

Flycatcher currently offers **Dysport and Xeomin**. That doesn't make Botox an inferior product, and we wouldn't suggest otherwise. What's more important is explaining which product and treatment approach makes sense for your face.

## So what actually matters?

You shouldn't need to arrive at a consultation knowing a conversion ratio, memorizing protein chemistry or demanding one vial by name.

You should be able to explain what you're hoping to change: the frown line that makes you look angry, the forehead movement you want to soften, or the crow's feet that bother you in photos. And you should be able to say what you want to keep: a natural brow position, visible expression and a face that still looks like yours.

**The product matters. But a good treatment plan connects the product to your anatomy, your goals, a thoughtful dose and precise placement.** That's a better way to choose than whichever brand wins the internet's comparison chart.

## Considering Injectables?

You don't need to know which neuromodulator you want before your consultation. At Flycatcher, we'll discuss your goals and explain whether Dysport, Xeomin or another approach makes sense for you—with an emphasis on looking like yourself, not overdone.
