SkinPen microneedling treatment on male client in Austin

How Men Can Revitalize Their Skin and Reduce Signs of Aging with Skinpen Microneedling

You work out, and you eat right (mostly 😉). You take care of your body, and it shows. But let’s face it – you’re not getting any younger, and maybe the years are starting to show around your face and neck.

Calling all men in Austin ages 30 and over! How’s your skin looking these days? Don’t just say “it’s fine” before you take a minute to take a good look. Notice any lines, wrinkles, sags, or old acne scars? At Flycatcher, we’re here to shoot you straight – none of those things will improve on their own. But we’re also here to share some good news – there’s something you can do about it!

If you’re someone who appreciates the value of exercising and taking care of your body to look and feel better, you’ll appreciate this too. Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body, found in our bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and skin. It provides structure and strength to our tissues, keeps our joints flexible, our bones strong, and our skin smooth.

Until it doesn’t...

As we age, our bodies produce less collagen. Collagen production decreases by about 1% per year starting in our mid-20s, and the decline can become more prominently noticeable in the way we look and feel as we approach our 40s and 50s.

Diet, exercise, stretching, and getting proper rest can help moderate the loss of body collagen, but the skin still tends to be the first to show signs of aging. With less collagen to support the skin's structure, firmness and elasticity are lost, making the skin more prone to sag and develop wrinkles.

Dude, Where’s My Healthy-Looking Skin?

Miss your younger skin? You can help bring it back. Men’s skin tends to be thicker and oilier and contains more collagen than women’s skin, but eventually, it shows signs of aging, too.

While women have been taking advantage of microneedling for improving skin appearance for years, microneedling treatments for men are becoming increasingly popular in Austin, TX (and all across the country).

Microneedling is a great option for men who want to improve the appearance of their skin without resorting to more invasive approaches. Flycatcher offers SkinPen Microneedling that can be applied to both the face and neck to help activate your body’s natural skin-healing power.

The skin is pricked with tiny, sterilized needles, creating small microchannels. Your body’s natural wound response then produces more collagen and elastin in the affected areas. The result? Smoother skin with fewer lines and wrinkles! Microneedling significantly improves the appearance of acne scars, too.

What is SkinPen?

skinpen microneedling treatment

SkinPen is the only microneedling device and procedure approved by the FDA, and we’re proud to leverage this technology for men in Austin at Flycatcher. The needles are uniformly straight and sterile (unlike some you may encounter from other providers and devices), so you can trust you’re getting the safest, most reliable treatment available.

For your greater peace of mind, just know that the SkinPen precision system has been clinically proven and verified. SkinPen is a patient-recommended solution, as well – 90% of subjects surveyed by the makers of SkinPen said they would also recommend follow-up treatments.

What to Expect with SkinPen Microneedling Treatment

At Flycatcher, we specialize in providing a full suite of aesthetic treatments including SkinPen microneedling for men in the greater Austin, TX area, and our staff is fully trained and credentialed to perform these procedures correctly.

Pre-Treatment

First, we’ll gently cleanse the areas of your skin to be treated, and then a topical numbing cream is applied. We then allow sufficient time for the numbing cream to kick in; typically 45 minutes.

SkinPen Treatment

The handheld SkinPen device is maneuvered by our provider around your face (and neck if you so choose), and the tiny needles create millions of controlled microchannels in the top dermal layer.

These intentional “injuries” serve to jumpstart the production of collagen and elastin, and encourage the release of growth factors that recruit and increase reparative cells. In the natural resulting healing process, lines and wrinkles in the skin are reduced and rough patches in the skin are smoothed out.

Once the SkinPen procedure is completed – only 15 to 20 minutes – we follow up by applying a hydrating serum to help ease any discomfort.

That’s all there is to it! Including the time required for numbing, a typical microneedling session only takes 60 minutes. In other words, you can easily schedule a SkinPen treatment during your lunch break!

After Treatment

SkinPen microneedling for men doesn’t require any downtime; you can go right back to work or resume your normal daily activities. Your skin may initially appear slightly pink to red, similar to what you’d experience with a mild sunburn. This is completely normal and should subside within 24 hours.

If you plan to spend any time outside, be sure to apply an appropriate chemical-free sunscreen. You’ll also want to keep your skin hydrated by using a mild cleanser and a recommended moisturizer. Our providers would be glad to make suggestions, and we offer a full suite of preferred men’s skincare products at the clinic as well.

SkinPen FAQs

Who is a good candidate for SkinPen microneedling treatment? Who is not a good fit?

The SkinPen system is safe for all skin types and tones, and is proven to improve the appearance of facial acne scars and wrinkles on the neck. Studies have shown no incidence of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) or discoloration of the skin which can sometimes be a risk with other procedures, particularly in patients with darker skin types. SkinPen has been a trusted microneedling choice for over 3 million patients!

If you’re a healthy adult male in the Austin area, you could be an ideal candidate for microneedling treatment as long as none of the following apply:

  • Have active skin cancer in the treatment area(s)
  • Have open wounds, sores, infection, or irritated skin in the treatment area(s)
  • Have an allergy to stainless steel or anesthetics
  • Have a hemorrhagic (bleeding) disorder or hemostatic (bleeding) dysfunction
  • Are currently taking drugs with the ingredient isotretinoin (Accutane)

Also note that SkinPen treatment has not been evaluated for those currently receiving chemotherapy or radiation therapy, are diabetic or suffer a thyroid dysfunction, or have a history of keloids, hypertrophic scarring, or poor wound healing.

What results can I expect from SkinPen microneedling treatment? How many sessions are needed, and how often?

You can start seeing positive results after just one single treatment, but for optimal results we recommend a series of four treatments (we offer packages of 4 at a discount). These should be scheduled three to four weeks apart, and we also recommend annual or twice-a-year follow-up treatments going forward. Optimal results will be seen three to four weeks after your fourth and final treatment.

Does SkinPen microneedling hurt?

We’ll be honest, gents – it ain’t gonna tickle. At the same time, it’s really not as bad as it sounds! The procedure is completely safe, and the needles used are very small and uniformly sharp.

Many patients tell us the amount of discomfort they experienced is actually less than they were expecting. Our licensed professional also applies a numbing cream to the treatment area(s) before starting the procedure, to help minimize any discomfort. After the procedure, your skin can be a little red and sensitive for the first 24 hours, similar to a sunburn.

What are the potential side effects of SkinPen microneedling treatment?

Clinical studies show that common treatment responses on the face and neck include dryness, redness, burning, and itchiness which could last 1-3 days. Some tenderness and peeling/flaking has also been noted to occur for up to 7 days. At the 3-month post-treatment visit during the clinical study, no adverse events related to SkinPen treatment were noted.

How much does SkinPen microneedling cost?

That’s a fair question, and at Flycatcher we pride ourselves on providing complete transparency for all of our skin treatment solutions pricing:

  • Microneedling with SkinPen- Full Face: Individual $400, Package of 4 for $1399
  • Microneedling with SkinPen - Full Face & Neck: Individual $475, Package of 4 for $1699

Can I use SkinPen with Botox or filler?

It is recommended to wait at least 2 weeks after Botox and 4 weeks after other fillers like Juvederm before scheduling a SkinPen microneedling treatment. This requires a consultation with our provider and supervising physician.

What about facial hair? Do I have to shave my beard first?

We’re sorry to say that, yes, you’re going to have to lose that facial hair first. Before undergoing a SkinPen procedure, it’s best to shave your beard entirely. Even leaving stubble can interfere with the treatment.

What’s the difference between microneedling with SkinPen and RF microneedling?

We get that question a lot. Microneedling uses small needles to create micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating collagen production and promoting skin rejuvenation. RF microneedling builds on this by adding radiofrequency energy which heats the deeper layers of the skin, further enhancing collagen production and tightening effects. Which treatment you should choose really depends on the severity of the skin conditions you’re looking to address and the type of results you’re seeking.

RF microneedling penetrates deeper into the skin and targets underlying tissue layers for more significant improvements with stubborn skin concerns. Morpheus8 RF microneedling typically produces faster, more dramatic improvements than SkinPen microneedling alone, thanks in part to the added thermal energy provided.

Recovery for both procedures is generally minimal, but there can be more redness and swelling after an RF microneedling treatment due to its inclusion of deeper skin penetration and heat therapy. If you’re not sure which treatment is right for you, we’d be happy to schedule a consultation!
