IPL photofacial treatment on a male client in our Austin clinic

What Is IPL Treatment (and Why Should Austin Men Care?)

Across Austin, more men are finally giving their skin the respect it deserves. Maybe it’s the sun, maybe it’s the stress of long workweeks, or maybe it’s just the rising awareness that aging well isn’t an accident—it’s a choice. Either way, more guys are realizing IPL is one of the smartest ways to undo years of sun without making a big production of it.

IPL, short for Intense Pulsed Light (and sometimes called a "photofacial"), uses controlled pulses of light to target discoloration, redness, visible sun damage, and uneven tone. It’s not a laser (we’ll explain the difference shortly), but it’s one of the most effective tools available for treating years of Texas sun in a matter of minutes.

And here in Austin—between Barton Springs weekends, Lake Travis summers, ACL in the fall, and 300 days of sunshine—men take a lot of UV on the chin. IPL helps undo all that damage so the face looking back at you in the mirror matches how young and sharp you feel.

Understanding IPL Treatment

What is IPL treatment? At its core, IPL is a technology that sends quick flashes of broad-spectrum light into the skin. These pulses target excess pigment, redness, and broken capillaries by heating them just enough to trigger your body’s natural repair process. As those damaged spots break down and rise to the surface, your skin gradually clears, brightens, and evens out.

Over time—and especially with a series of treatments—you’ll notice fewer dark spots, less visible redness, smoother texture, and an overall healthier, more refined look.

How IPL Differs from Laser Technology

Lasers work by emitting light at a single, focused wavelength, which makes them very precise for targeting specific concerns—like tattoo removal or deep resurfacing—but also means they tend to be more intense and can require extra downtime for healing. IPL, on the other hand, uses a broad spectrum of light in quick pulses.

Because the light covers multiple wavelengths, IPL can address several issues at once: sun spots, redness, visible blood vessels, and uneven skin tone. It’s a gentler approach than most lasers, often with less recovery needed. For busy men, this means you can treat a range of concerns in a single session—without having to press pause on your normal routine.

The Benefits of IPL for Men

So… what does an IPL do? And what’s the benefit of IPL? Here are the greatest hits:

  • Fades sun spots and discoloration

  • Reduces facial redness and broken capillaries

  • Smooths uneven tone and blotchiness

  • Helps refine skin texture

  • Makes skin look younger, healthier, and more rested

Sun damage is the No. 1 reason men seek IPL—especially here in Austin, where most of us live outdoors half the year. IPL turns the clock back on UV aging, giving the skin a cleaner, more polished appearance that still looks natural.

Candidacy and Safety

Most men with light-to-medium skin tones and visible sun damage are excellent candidates. If you have freckles, redness, sun spots, or blotchy tone, IPL works wonders.

This is where expertise matters. Men with darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick IV–VI) require caution because IPL may not distinguish safely between pigment you want and pigment you don’t. At Flycatcher, we follow strict safety protocols and will guide you to the right treatment—whether that’s IPL or an alternative better suited for your skin type.

Men with very dark tans, recent sunburns, active breakouts, or certain medications may need to delay treatment. The goal is always safety first—results second.

Experience and Expectations

How painful is an IPL photo facial?

Most men compare it to a quick rubber-band snap with a little warmth behind it. Uncomfortable for a moment, sure—but tolerable. That said, it can be more uncomfortable in areas with dense facial hair (even when shaved). Our providers can work around these areas when possible.

Redness and mild swelling afterward are normal and usually fade within a few hours.

Will IPL Affect Facial Hair or Beard Growth?

Short answer: Not typically—but some follicles can still be affected even in facial rejuvenation settings. While these settings use lower energy and different filters than true hair‑removal modes, stray follicles in the treated area may weaken, shed, or become less dense. Most men won’t notice meaningful beard thinning, but the possibility exists and is worth understanding before treatment.

How Many Sessions will I Need?

Most men benefit from 4–6 sessions, spaced four weeks apart. Sun damage doesn’t happen overnight—and neither does reversing it.

Flycatcher's Casanova Photofacial is sold as a series of four treatments.

When will I See Results and How Long will results Last?

Changes begin within a week, with spots darkening and flaking off (a good sign). Full results continue to develop over several weeks. Results typically last several months, especially with a good at-home skincare regimen and sun protection.

Ideally, for an active Austin man who is subjected to regular sun damage, a series of four treatments once a year or once every other year is recommended.

How to Prepare and Take Care of Your Skin

Before your IPL appointment, we’ll ask you to:

  • Avoid sun exposure and self-tanners

  • Pause retinoids or exfoliants

  • Come in with clean skin

If we’re treating areas where you have facial hair, we will ask you to shave so the light can reach the skin more evenly.

For the first 48 hours post-treatment:

  • Skip the gym and heavy sweating

  • Avoid sun exposure

  • Hold off on harsh skincare products

Your job is simple: keep the skin calm and protected while it heals.

Cost and Value

IPL pricing varies depending on the area treated, but most Austin clinics (including Flycatcher) fall within a similar range. More sessions mean better results—especially for deeper sun damage. Other factors impacting price include:

  • Size of the treatment area

  • Number of sessions

  • Severity of sun damage

  • Technology used (IPL vs. BBL)

Here's how we price our IPL treatments, which we call our Casanova Photofacial:

Casanova Photofacial - Face or Neck

Individual treatment: $250 or Package of 4: $800

Casanova Photofacial - Face + Neck

Individual: $350 or Package of 4: $1200
