Hims, Keeps, Ro or GetHairMD? Online vs. In-Person Hair Loss Treatment Compared

Hair-loss treatment has become remarkably easy to buy online.

Answer a few questions, upload some photos, have a healthcare provider review your information, and medication can show up at your door—often for $20 to $50 a month.

For plenty of men, that may be all they’re looking for.

But there is another approach: start with more information before deciding what to prescribe, then measure what happens after treatment begins.

Those two approaches can cost very different amounts. They’re also not necessarily selling the same thing.

The useful question isn’t whether GetHairMD is “better” than Hims, Keeps, Ro or Happy Head. It’s whether you mainly want convenient access to hair-loss medication—or a more personalized process for deciding what to use and measuring what happens next.

Sometimes the Simple Approach Really Is Enough

Finasteride and minoxidil aren’t second-rate hair-loss treatments simply because they’re inexpensive.

How Hims, Keeps and Ro Actually Work

It would be unfair—and outdated—to describe today’s online hair-loss companies as websites that simply hand everybody the same generic pill.

All three use a medical telehealth model.

Hims

Hims starts with an online evaluation covering your hair loss and health history. A healthcare provider reviews your information and determines whether prescription treatment is appropriate. Its current hair-loss lineup includes oral finasteride, minoxidil and compounded combination treatments, with ongoing online access to providers. [2]

Current Hims pricing shows one of the clearest advantages of the model: generic oral finasteride is advertised at $264 for a 12-month purchase, or about $22 per month. A three-month subscription is $78, or approximately $26 per month. [3]

Keeps

Keeps follows a similar process: complete an online assessment, receive a clinician review and, when appropriate, have medication shipped directly to you.

Its lineup includes oral finasteride, minoxidil, topical finasteride/minoxidil and newer combination treatments. Current regular pricing for oral finasteride is $80 for three months, although Keeps was advertising an introductory first shipment of $56 when we checked. Its finasteride-and-minoxidil plan lists at $113 for three months, with a current introductory first shipment of $79.10. [4]

Ro

Ro also uses an online medical evaluation before treatment is prescribed.

Its current hair-loss options include generic oral finasteride, oral and topical minoxidil, and Mane Spray, a compounded topical containing finasteride, minoxidil and tretinoin.

Ro is particularly transparent about pricing. Generic oral finasteride currently costs $20 per month on a quarterly plan, $18 per month for six months or $16 per month on a 12-month plan. Mane Spray runs $50 per month quarterly or $43 per month on the six-month plan. [5]

The common appeal is obvious: convenience, access and relatively low cost.

There’s nothing wrong with that.

Happy Head Shows How Far Telehealth Personalization Has Come

Happy Head is the most useful counterpoint to the idea that online hair treatment is automatically “generic.”

Rather than focusing primarily on a small menu of standard prescriptions, Happy Head emphasizes customized compounded formulas developed through a dermatologist consultation. Its customized prescription formulas currently range from approximately $59 to $119 per month, depending on the ingredients, with shipping included. [6]

Happy Head also offers genomic testing.

Its at-home DNA kit uses a cheek swab to provide genetic information related to hair health and treatment considerations. The kit currently lists for $349, with a promotional price of $298 at the time of this research. [7]

That changes the comparison considerably.

Customized prescription medication—and even genomic testing—are no longer exclusive to an in-person hair-restoration program.

So Flycatcher’s case can’t simply be, “We personalize treatment and they don’t.”

The difference is what happens around that prescription.

Where Nutrafol Fits

Nutrafol gets lumped into Hims-versus-Keeps comparisons all the time, but it belongs in a different category.

Nutrafol Men is a drug-free dietary supplement, not a prescription telehealth service.

Its regular retail price is currently $88 per month. Nutrafol also offers subscription discounts and periodic promotions, so the actual subscription price can be lower. At the $88 retail price, that works out to approximately $528 for six months or $1,056 for a year. [8]

Nutrafol has invested in clinical research on its formulations, so it shouldn’t simply be dismissed as another bottle of hair vitamins.

But it still represents a different treatment decision.

A man looking specifically for a drug-free nutraceutical approach may find Nutrafol appealing. A man comparing prescription finasteride or minoxidil is shopping in a different aisle.

Compounding makes it possible to create formulations or combinations that aren’t available as standard commercial products. The regulatory distinction is worth understanding: a compounded medication is not itself FDA-approved, even when it contains ingredients used in FDA-approved products.

For example, oral finasteride is FDA-approved for male pattern hair loss, while there is currently no FDA-approved topical finasteride product in the United States. FDA has specifically cautioned healthcare providers and consumers about potential risks associated with compounded topical finasteride products. [11]

What Are You Actually Paying For?

This is the part most hair-loss comparisons dance around.

We won’t.

Telehealth can be dramatically less expensive.

Pricing below was checked September 2, 2026. Competitor pricing, promotions, subscription terms and available formulas can change, so consider this a snapshot.
