How Does GetHairMD Compare to Hims, Nutrafol, and Keeps?
CALLING ALL MEN IN AUSTIN WHO ARE LOSING HAIR WHERE YOU WANT HAIR:
Let’s say you’re a young Austinite professional in your early 30s. You work hard, play hard, and take good care of yourself. You’re a focused young gentleman who faces roadblocks and tackles problems head-on, and you’ve experienced many successes in overcoming the challenges that come your way.
Enter the next challenge: the man in the mirror. More specifically, you’ve begun to notice that the hair on the man in the mirror is getting thinner up top. You’re also finding more hair in the shower drain than you like to see, and you decide it’s high time to do something about it.
Maybe some of your buddies and classmates are bald at this point, and that’s not the look you want for yourself. You’re not in panic mode just yet – you do still have hair, after all – but you’re starting to get concerned. And because you’re a man of action, you know that if you choose to sit on this, nothing will change or improve.
You’re not ready to jump to a surgical treatment, but you are ready to explore your possibilities for hair loss self-treatment, including prescriptions and supplements.
This sound like you?
Then read on, brother, because the team at Flycatcher is here to help you research and consider your best options to stay ahead of your hair loss problem.
Where did my hair go?
If you’re experiencing mild to moderate thinning or androgenetic alopecia, you’re not alone. What’s commonly known as male pattern baldness is understood to be mostly related to genetic predisposition, but there’s no clear consensus about how the process works.
Many scientists believe hair loss in men can be connected to the influence of testosterone (DHT) on the anagen (growing) phase of hair. But, there are many, many factors that combine to contribute to hair loss.
While men’s hair follicles in the ear, nose, and eyebrow areas often begin to increase in size over time, scalp hair follicles can react in the opposite way and begin to miniaturize. These scalp hairs spend less time in the anagen phase, ultimately leading to less hair on top of your head.
The appeal of Hims, Keeps, and Nutrafol as first steps
Many men suffering through the early stages of androgenetic alopecia find hope in the products offered by Hims, Keeps, and Nutrafol. Each presents its own solutions for hair loss, but each also differs somewhat in terms of individual approach and target audience.
In the case of Keeps vs. Hims, both primarily focus on prescription-based treatments such as finasteride (also known by the brand name Propecia) and minoxidil (also known by the brand name Rogaine). While Keeps focuses solely on hair loss, Hims offers a broader range of health and wellness products for men.
In comparing Nutrafol vs. Hims, Keeps, and other prescription services, the key difference is that Nutrafol offers a prescription-free, drug-free, supplement-based approach.
Of course, prescriptions and supplements often require more trial and error to determine what may or may not be beneficial for each individual.
The landscape of at-home hair loss treatments
If you’re looking for hair recovery products you can use at home, there are certainly plenty of offerings out there. Of these, Hims, Keeps, and Nutrafol are particularly popular with younger men for a number of reasons. These products are widely available, relatively easy to use, and come at a cheaper price point compared to other therapy options.
Hims and Keeps
Hims and Keeps are both sold as telehealth, Rx-focused direct-to-consumer (DTC) products. Hims features finasteride and minoxidil, both of which are FDA-approved and clinically shown to help treat male pattern baldness. Various delivery methods are offered, including topical sprays, serums, and chewable oral medication.
The finasteride/minoxidil combo from Hims typically costs around $28-$40/month. Hims also offers a broader range of men’s health products, including those designed for skin care, sexual health, and mental health.
Keeps, on the other hand, is a brand that focuses solely on addressing male pattern baldness. Like Hims, Keeps features both finasteride and minoxidil products. Minoxidil is offered as either a topical solution or foam (around $10-$15/month), finasteride as an oral prescription (around $25-$35/month), and Keeps also offers combination plans in discounted bundles.
Both Hims and Keeps offer supplemental hair thickening shampoos that include purported natural DHT-blockers, as well.
Nutrafol
Nutrafol doesn’t provide topical solutions; instead, it offers a different approach by providing nutritional supplements intended to address the root causes of hair thinning and loss. These drug-free, prescription-free supplements contain ingredients such as curcumin, ashwagandha, saw palmetto, and collagen.
There are a handful of clinical studies that point to the efficacy of these supplements, but Nutrafol products aren’t supported by the same FDA-backed research that comes with finasteride and minoxidil products.
Nutrafol products are generally more expensive than Hims or Keeps prescription treatments, too. A monthly supply of Nutrafol supplements usually ranges between $79-$88.
Does Hims and Keeps really work for hair loss?
While prescription treatments and supplements can have some positive effect on hair loss, they can still be hit-or-miss. We would be doing readers a disservice if we didn’t touch on some of the drawbacks related to Hims, Keeps, and Nutrafol and set realistic expectations.
Let’s start with Nutrafol. Anyone who has taken Nutrafol will tell you the same thing: “It’s a big pill to swallow!” And swallow the capsule you must- four times a day!! This creates a compliance issue with many Nutrafol users.
While the Hims and Keeps prescriptions will be effective for some users, the efficacy of minoxidil will not be the same across all users.
Minoxidil is a prodrug—it must be converted to its active form, minoxidil sulfate, by the enzyme SULT1A1, located in the outer root sheath of hair follicles. People with low SULT1A1 enzymatic activity in their scalp follicles may not produce enough minoxidil sulfate for the drug to be effective. In fact, about 30–40% of patients are considered "non-responders" due to insufficient SULT1A1 activity.
If you’ve been taking minoxidil and wonder why it doesn’t seem to be working, it’s probably because you are a “non-responder”.
In contrast to minoxidil, the proportion of true pharmacologic "non-responders" to finasteride appears to be smaller.
The bottom line with Hims and Keeps is that users are not getting a personalized, custom prescription based on a full clinical evaluation or genomic profiling. Generally speaking, Bob is getting what Jay is getting which is what Ted is getting. Results will vary for each.
What makes GetHairMD different?
We want to introduce you to GetHairMD because we believe it’s a more effective approach than Nutrafol, Hims, Keeps, and the other mass-market players. That’s why we’ve partnered with them at Flycatcher.
Most importantly, GetHairMD uses a personalized approach to hair loss. What does this look like?
The process begins with an analysis of your scalp and hair health using our HairMetrix technology. It shows us hair health markers like density, diameter of hairs, distance between follicles, etc. This gives us a baseline that we can evaluate against in the future after you begin treatment.
Next, we gather a cheek swab, which is then securely sent to a state-of-the-art laboratory for analysis. Based on your hair panel results, a personalized prescription topical is created just for you.
If you are a “non-responder” to Minoxidil, like 30 to 40% of the population, the swab analysis will recognize this and your prescription will be formulated as to not include it.
The genomic swab test kit is a one-time fee of $399, and prescription topical costs $80 for a 30-day supply. The topical will be shipped directly to your door.
This personalized approach is more costly compared to Hims and Keeps but over the long term it will prove to be much more efficacious as it relates to the actual regrowing of your hair.
GetHairMD offers a comprehensive, synergistic approach by also providing supplementation in the form of daily gummies that include nutrients your body may be lacking for hair and scalp health. Shampoo, conditioner, and a daily serum can also be used at home in combination with your personalized prescription.
GetHairMD’s thoughtful, layered strategy has proven to be most effective in fighting hair loss for men, as well as for women.
The hair analysis and testing is conducted in our Flycatcher studio, where you can also purchase the supplements, shampoos, etc.
