Managing Acne in Men with Chemical Peel Treatments

Are you man enough for a man peel?

Let’s face it – a great complexion isn’t something you’re necessarily born with. But no matter where your complexion is right now, a chemical peel is a great way to help you feel more confident about how your skin looks and feels, especially if you are a man dealing with acne.

In the past, many folks assumed that chemical peels for acne were only for women, but that’s simply not true. More and more guys in the ATX are now choosing to take advantage of chemical peels at Flycatcher.

Many who have experienced Flycatcher's Signature Acne Peel describe it as a great little pick-me-up. These fine fellows note that the chemical peel works fast and really does make their face feel healthier and smoother.

Acne Starts with the Pores

There are two types of skin pores – sweat pores and oil pores. You have sweat pores all over your body, and they help regulate body temperature. While sweat pores are usually too small to see with the naked eye, oil pores are larger. They cover nearly all of your skin, too, and oil pores secrete sebum, which helps keep your skin healthy, supple, and moisturized.

The problem occurs when oil pores or hair follicles become clogged; that’s when acne or folliculitis (inflammation of the hair follicles) can break out.

Acne is very common on the face and neck for males, but you can also sometimes get acne on the shoulders, chest, and back. Some of the leading acne factors in men include skin type, hormones, stress, and environmental factors.

Chemical peels can be an absolute game-changer for dudes with acne-prone skin.

Men tend to have oilier skin than women, which can sometimes contribute to more incidences of breakouts. Men’s skin pores are typically somewhat larger, too. But a chemical peel is incredibly effective at unclogging those pores, reducing acne, and evening out skin tone.

What Are Chemical Peels, and How Do They Work?

A chemical peel is a skin resurfacing treatment that can be applied to the face, neck, back, hands- anywhere men and women want to improve the look and feel of their skin.

The basic principle of skin resurfacing is to promote the regeneration and reorganization of these superficial layers, serving to improve the complexion, texture, and color tone of the skin. This is done by removal or intentional injury of the most superficial layers of the skin, which stimulates the growth of new layers of skin. The resulting new skin is often smoother, and shows fewer lines and wrinkles than the old skin.

Chemical Peel Options: Light, Medium, and Deep

Depending on what issues you’re seeking to address, you can choose a chemical peel treatment in one of three depths:

  • Light chemical peel. A light (or superficial) chemical peel works on the outer layer of skin (epidermis). It can be used to treat acne, fine wrinkles, dryness, and uneven skin tone. You can undergo light peel treatments more frequently, as often as every two to five weeks.
  • Medium chemical peel. A medium chemical peel removes skin cells from both the epidermis along with portions of the upper dermis (middle layer of skin). This approach can be used to treat wrinkles, acne scars, and uneven skin tone. Scheduling a series of procedures will be most effective in helping you both reach and maintain the desired level of results.
  • Deep chemical peel. A deep chemical peel removes skin cells down to an even deeper level in the dermis. This procedure is usually reserved for those with serious skin issues. Our physician or esthetician may recommend these for the treatment of deeper wrinkles and scars.

Note that chemical peels aren’t able to completely remove deep scars or wrinkles, and won’t necessarily eliminate all sagging skin concerns. To address issues of this nature, our professional provider at Flycatcher can suggest some of our other aesthetic treatment options for men, including RF microneedling and facial remodeling.

Specific Types of Peels: Glycolic Acid Peels, Salicylic Acid Peels, and TCA Peels

Glycolic is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that effectively exfoliates and moisturizes the skin. This is one of the most common types of peel solutions used.

Salicylic acid is a highly effective superficial peeling agent and one of the most effective ingredients to help control sebum (i.e.- oils) production, acne, and blemishes.

Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) is a rapid penetrating agent that is commonly used as a spot treatment on various parts of the body, in addition to the face.

Our Signature Acne Peel at Flycatcher includes a combination of both glycolic and salicylic acid peels.

The Chemical Peel Experience at Flycatcher

The first step is to schedule your consultation with one of our estheticians. She’ll inspect your skin to determine which peel solution would be best for you. Aurora will also take the time to listen to your motivations and desired results, and she’ll also explain how everything works and what you can expect both during and after the chemical peel treatment.

It’s best to stay out of direct sunlight for two weeks prior to your scheduled treatment and use sunscreen often.

Flycatcher's Signature Acne Peel includes:

  1. Double face cleanse
  2. Pore extractions and removal of black heads
  3. Pre-peel skin conditioner
  4. 50% Glycolic acid peel
  5. AcNo Complex acne serum which reduces sebum production, decreases redness/blemishes, and hydrates and soothes the skin
  6. 14-20% Salicylic acid peel (optional; for moderate to severe acne)
  7. Clay mask
  8. Hydrating serums, sunscreen

facial and chemical peel protocol at Flycatcher

You should know that we only use NOON™ Aesthetics chemical peel products featuring DermShield™ technology. A key advantage of this product line is that it features active ingredients containing unprecedented high concentration levels without all the usual side effects, like irritation, burning, redness, and generally unpleasant sensations.

The DermShield™ technology selectively suppresses tingling, burning, and itching, suppresses erythema and edema of the skin, and prevents inflammation.

Our peels are terrific for teenagers dealing with active acne, too. And as an added bonus, teens get 15% off individual acne treatments.

You can expect to see immediate results after your first chemical peel. That said, you’ll see even better results over time by scheduling a series of treatments. All of our chemical peels can be purchased individually or as a series of three or more at a discounted price.

In most cases, you will experience some redness and possibly tenderness after receiving a chemical peel – almost like a sunburn sensation – but this will clear up within an hour or two. A chemical peel won’t stop you from being able to go about your day-to-day activities immediately after treatment.

FAQs

Is a chemical peel painful?

At Flycatcher, we make every effort to keep your discomfort to a minimum. Peels can be a little uncomfortable but we definitely wouldn’t say they are painful.

The Glycolic acid peel we start with will be active for three to 15 minutes, depending on the patient and their acne. The sensation is most intense in the first couple of minutes then fades. The acid is then neutralized. The Salicylic acid peel is "self-neutralizing" after five to six hours, meaning it stops working on its own over time (discomfort fades within a few minutes though).

Can I still get a chemical peel if I have facial hair?

Yes, we won’t apply the peel directly to a full beard but if you just have a little scruff we can work with, and around, that.

What about chemical peels for acne scars?

Chemical peels can absolutely be used to treat mild to moderate acne scars, or make deeper acne scars appear less noticeable. Schedule a consultation with our provider at Flycatcher and we can recommend best solutions including chemical peels, SkinPen microneedling, and Morpheus8 RF microneedling treatments.

Can chemical peels treat my back acne?

Absolutely! Our Signature Acne Peel protocol can be adapted to treat your back acne (bacne). Schedule a consultation with our provider, and we’d be happy to recommend best solutions for treating back acne!

How much do chemical peels cost?

That’s a fair question, and at Flycatcher we pride ourselves on providing complete transparency for all of our skin treatment solutions pricing:

  • Signature Acne Peel - Individual $195, Package of 3 or more at 15% discount
  • Teen Discount – 15% off individual treatments
